“The day my sister and I were chosen to be loved, protected, and nourished—August 10th, the day my life forever changed. At 6 and 4 years old, my sister and I had been living the last 3 years in the foster care system waiting...Waiting for someone to show us that we mattered. That we were good enough to be daughters. Everyone else had abandoned us. We had so much stacked against us, continually being passed by for white babies time and time again. Yet, somehow we were the outliers! A young Midwestern couple saw us. Wanted us. Took a chance on us. Loved us and worked hard to build a family with us paving a new way. A new way to be a family. A new way to love. We celebrate this day every year to honor our adoption. Our love. Our commitment to each other.
