❓“WHICH RETINOID SHOULD I START WITH IF I AM NEW TO THEM”?
This is one of the most common questions I get as dermatologist, when discussing skincare and anti-aging.
There are many OTC retinols but only one retinoid: adapalene. I usually recommending being brave and “skipping straight to the good part” and trying a retinoid (which is stronger than retinols found in most OTC anti-aging creams). Don’t forget to start slow (see my recent posts with tips on how to do this).
Differin gel (its active ingredient being adapalene 0.1%, also similarly formulated by La Roche Posay) used to be available by prescription only years ago, but it is now available OTC in most drugstores/pharmacies. It is a vitamin A derivative used for acne, but also stimulates skin’s collagen production, and for this reason works beautifully for anti-aging.
Go straight to it, start slowly (my previous posts explain how to do this), and if too irritating, you can then switch to a milder one.
