Of the thousand plus photographs taken during our Peace Corps service in Benin, West Africa (1987-90), I chose the closest to our hearts. Bernadin was at our doorstep the moment we arrived and started carrying our boxes and bags. He was about to be 6. His mother brought us water in a large basin on her head daily for three years. She didn't speak one word of French only Fon. The photos show Bernadin on his 1st day of school and receiving his doctorate in Bratislava, Slovakia. All we did was help with some tuitions. His dissertation was French Foreign Relations in the context of the development of West Africa. If only education were free in the developing nations.
