FIRST World Records. If you’re relatively new here, you might not have heard much about my first big expedition. Back in 2016, I set out to complete the Explorers Grand Slam — summiting the highest mountain on each of the seven continents as well as trek to both the North and South Poles. Only 44 people in documented history had ever successfully completed it, and of those 44, only 2 had done it under a year. If you’ve heard me speak - or if you’ve read my books - you’ve likely heard the story from this expedition where my wife, Jenna, told me to “put my boots back on”. I had undergone an arduous journey of setbacks to summit Everest (6th of the 7 summits). After safely setting in to my tent at camp 4 in the death zone - beyond exhausted - Jenna tells me on a satellite phone call that I need to “put my boots back on” and get down the mountain so that I could get to the base of Denali in Alaska - the final summit - and climb straight through. I reached the final summit after just 139 days, breaking the record for the Explorers Grand Slam — as well as the speed record for the Seven Summits in 132 days. Fulfillment beyond my wildest dreams, and a sense that ‘anything is possible’. When we first dreamt up this project Jenna and I built a nonprofit called Beyond 7/2 to raise money to help kids lead healthier lives and dream big. We wanted to instill in them a Possible Mindset for whatever they hoped to achieve. We asked them, “What’s Your Everest?” and continued to ask ourselves the same. 8 years before that I had been severely burned in a fire and told I would never walk again normally. But I set a goal: complete a triathlon. 18 months later I completed, and much to my surprise, WON the Chicago Triathlon. The Possible Mindset was born, though I didn’t know it as that at the time. Since then, it’s brought me some of the greatest experiences of my life.
