When I first came across @moe.shimada.23’s work a while back, I was instantly attracted to the way she's examining still life format in her work, especially in Morandi-like portrayals of bottles and pots. I knew I wanted to include the work in one of the future projects, so when the idea for the current exhibition at @planxgallery in Capri started developing around the subjectivity of beauty, they felt like a perfect fit! • Presented in Morandi's homeland, #MoeShimada's 3 works included in Every Angel is Terrifying are pushing further the original idea of the iconic artist, beyond what's visible to the naked eye. Where he was interested in the tonal subtlety and compositional relationship in depicting simple subjects, the Japanese artist adds the element of the digital screen to the mix, manipulating the original scene before rendering it in oil. Ranging from glitches to frequent alternation and exaggeration of colors and light settings, these essentially dull vistas of bottles on the shelf are transformed into vibrant frolic of colors, shapes, and the exciting play between light and shadow. Painted tightly, but still leaving the clear trace of a human hand, the works are imbued with the atmospheric haze of Morandi's Metaphysical painting (Pittura Metafisica) but the originally muted color palette based on whites and greys is now heavily infused with vibrant selection of screen-bright pinks, greens, and yellows. • #EveryAngelIsTerrifying is featuring all new works by @lakormis , @____torso____, @moe.shimada.23, and @javierruiz_studio and will be on view until the end of this week.
