The Belgian Sub Rosa label has just released Sybil Of The Rhine by Lily Joel Plays The Organ, a continuation of the Lily Joel project of singer and sound sculptor Lyn Cassiers and jazz pianist Jozef Dumoulin. Sybil Of The Rhine is the result of a residency Cassiers and Dumoulin did in Eupen in the spring of 2022. Six of the tracks are compositions by medieval composer Hildegard Von Bingen. Interpretations of works by Robert Schumann and Tom Jobin, next to two original compositions by Cassiers and Dumoulin themselves, lend a surprising variety to the album. With Lyn Cassiers on voice and electronics and Jozelf Dumoulin on pipe organ, Sybil Of The Rhine invents a new space for Von Bingen's work, touching upon the sacred nature and intent of the original pieces, yet infusing them with a sense of lightness and abstraction.
