There can be some very strong opinions when it comes to whether women in Australia should go through the Public or the Private system to have their babies. To be honest there are pros and cons for both and it completely depends on what the family want for their pregnancy and birth.
The most important things are that you feel:
- Informed
- Heard
- In control
- Supported
- Safe
But most importantly, that you are the most important person in the world.
There are so many times that I hear women say that they aren’t happy with their midwife or obstetrician and don’t know that they can change. If you do not feel comfortable or excited by your midwife or doctor, then you have options and it is never too late to change. This is your pregnancy and birth and you are in control and the most important person. Think about it this way, if you went to a dentist that you didn’t like or that made you uncomfortable you wouldn’t go back, would you? Maternity care is exactly the same, YOU are in control.
Always trust your instinct, especially during pregnancy when it is heightened. If you aren’t happy, shout it from the roof tops. If you are worried, please go and get checked. You are never wasting anyones time.
As a midwife and mum who has worked and had babies in both the Public and Private System, it is all about how you are made to feel that you will remember for the rest of your life 🤍✨
