Robert Lindsay Bogan Sr. (april 1, 1931 - march 7, 2022) “papa sweetie” fought in the korean war, earned a purple heart and 3 bronze stars, only to come home to a country that dehumanized, disrespected, and treated him with hatred for the color of his skin. he threw each medal away, heartbroken, angry, and betrayed by the people & country he risked everything for. he eventually moved to minneapolis where he lived in the same house for 60 years. this house was one block away from the Cup Foods where George Floyd was brutally murdered. the last time I was with him, he spoke about how much change still needs to happen in this country, and how many things haven’t changed a bit over his lifetime. papa was the most loving, generous, ball of light and joy I have known. on this memorial day, the thousands of other Black americans who have risked or given their lives for a country that gives them little in return, are in my heart 🤍
