Have you ever wondered how park staff work to protect and preserve the historic buildings in the park? Our Historic Preservation Crew helps make this happen.
Recently, we restored the Backcountry Sign Shop building, located in the Headquarters East area of the park near the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center.
Built in 1929, this building has an interesting history. It was first located on Bear Lake Road and was used as a bunkhouse for staff to support the construction of the Bear Lake Road. In 1938, this building was then moved to the park's Headquarters area. Today, this building is used by the park's wildlife biologists and the backcountry sign shop.
This building was in need of both historic preservation and stabilization work. Rocky's Historic Preservation Crew first worked to carefully excavate around the base of the building to access rotten logs in need of replacement. A rotten rim joist was replaced to safely stabilize the structure of the building. Crew members then worked to remove rotten logs and replaced those log posts located at the bottom of the building. Crew members then worked to shape the new logs to match the character of the rest of the building.
Next, the doors and windows were restored. When work on the structure of the building was done, the trench around the building was refilled and the asphalt around the building was replaced. Finally, crew members painted the whole exterior of this building.
It takes a lot of hard work to restore a historic building. Thank you to all of our Historic Preservation Crew members for their skills and hard work to complete this important project.
