The powerful face jugs of North Carolina-based ceramicist Jim McDowell: (1) Never Forget, (2) Angel Watchin’ Over Me, (3) Good Trouble, a domestic monument to Representative John Lewis, (4) For Dr Mae—a jug honoring Dr Mae Jamison, the first Black female astronaut, (5) We Are Not Forgotten
“I make face jugs and have made them as a way to defuse my raging anger that at times had me in a course of destruction,” says Jim. “Face jugs are ugly because slavery was ugly. I try to dip into the historical facts that have been hidden or obscured to bring forth untold information about my people.”
“I am not a deep thinker, but I am a deep feeler. I believe that in my DNA is the accumulation of skills, knowledge and wisdom that I am now privileged to utilize.. hence, my face jugs.”
Proceeds from sales of the jugs will be funding a forthcoming book about the life and works of Jim, with images by Lenard Smith (@archivethestudio) and a tender interview and writings by Camille Okhio (@cokhio)
