It’s been about six weeks since the crew went to Iceland for @_charliekane’s birthday, and I’m still struggling with how to put it into words, so here goes. When we were crossing the Jökulgilskvísl river to stand at the base of Grænihryggur — the ancient “green ridge” — or hiking up a glacier to drink from a stream, or dipping our toes in the ocean on a black sand beach, I found myself frequently thinking of a John Coltrane rumination: “I start in the middle of a sentence and move both directions at once.” The best way I can put it is that the feeling of multi-directional movement, albeit in an entirely different context, is what spending time in Iceland was like. The natural wonders you see everywhere you look can make you feel small, insignificant, like a speck of decades-old dust barely clinging to the surface of a well-loved record, in the best way possible. They make you slow down and think about life, time, and the beauty of the earth. Returning to the start of the sentence, if you will. Simultaneously and undoubtedly, they move you forward. Time with your loved ones in a special place like this fills your soul with a lifetime’s worth of gratitude. That’s the best way I can put it. Yes, I know it’s a bit long-winded for an IG caption 😂
