When I was away from home and unable to visit Europe during the Covid travel ban, I reconnected to Renaissance painting through recalling its colors in my studio in Brooklyn. My technique of color layering then went through research and refinement, which is still ongoing. And, while researching painting techniques and alchemy, my actual paintings came to feel like a preservation of fading memories - layer by layer, surfaces arose, made through a mostly unconscious and intuitive process. Now - being able to experience Botticelli’s Primavera in flesh this spring was beyond. I have so much respect for such old paintings - their quiet and persisting presence over the centuries. And also, the stillness of my mother’s garden - both of these served as inspiring memories for this painting I made in advance of my travels.
