“A Buoytiful Christmas Tree” There is never enough free time in December to get to everywhere in New England in order to capture the amazingly unique holiday vibes that this historic region has to offer. Each year we try to choose new areas that we haven’t gotten to yet and early last December Kennebunkport was the first destination to stay for a quick overnight adventure. The town itself was finishing up the first weekend of Christmas Prelude as we arrived on Sunday afternoon and it was awesome to see the always beautiful downtown all dressed up for the holiday. Unfortunately Monday morning started out with rain and continued until around 1pm before giving way to incredibly thick fog along the coast. The buoy Christmas Tree in Wells Harbor had been on my list to get to for a few years now, so even with the not working favorable conditions was the plan for late afternoon after leaving Kennebunkport. Just about 20 minutes before “sunset” on the drive over the sky began to magically open up enough for light to break through. Although it wasn’t any kind of vivid sunset I loved the pastel color palette in the sky that complemented the tones of the buoys. The cloud patterns also worked perfectly for the composition here as they swirled above the buoy tree and the leftover rain puddles on the dock allowed for a partial reflection of the tree itself. I read that students from the local high school paint these every year and love how it’s yet another example of New England’s special holiday vibes.
