I have mixed feelings about Women’s Day, but using it as an excuse to highlight responsible travel companies in India led by women!
👉🏼 @planetabled: Founded by Neha Arora. Aims to make travel and adventure accessible to all, including differently abled people. Think wheelchair rafting in Rishikesh or adaptive skiing in Kashmir!
👉🏼 Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company: Ladakh’s first travel company to be owned and run by Ladakhi women - challenging many societal conventions. Founded by mountaineer Thinlas Chorol.
👉🏼 @himalayanark: One of my biggest inspirations in the travel space! Founder Malika Virdi is forever raising the benchmark for community-owned, equitable, conservation-linked tourism in the fragile Himalayan region of Uttarakhand.
👉🏼 @openeyesproject: In Delhi, a city seriously lagging behind in women’s safety, this daring project, founded by Anna Alaman, trains women from challenging socio-economic backgrounds as guides and drivers.
👉🏼 @astrostays: Founded by Sonal Asgotraa. Female Ladakhi guides, equipped with telescopes and the knowledge of stars, promise to take urban travellers into a magical universe spared the ill-effects of air and light pollution.
👉🏼 @spitiecosphere: My first introduction to the world of responsible travel, over a decade ago! Founded by friend and neighbor Ishita Khanna, Ecosphere offers volunteer travel and local experiences across Spiti Valley - and reinvests profits in renewable energy and sustainable development projects in the region.
👉🏼 @kishkindatrust: Founded by Shama Pawar, Kishkinda Trust works with local communities to instill pride in Hampi’s historical heritage and culture. I stayed at their Uramma Heritage Homes way back and felt in awe of their restoration efforts.
Have you travelled with a responsible travel company led by women? Tag them and show some appreciation!
