2022 in review: the pink one
In February, Max Farago and I curated Everyday Rituals, an exhibition bringing together works by visionary artists and accomplished makers. The youngest artist in the show, Peter Shire, was in their mid-70s.
Our aim was primarily to connect artists who have followed a more unsuspecting path to creating works, with pieces reflecting a momentous time in their lives, a transition in circumstance, and for the most part created without consideration for the contemporary art market. Max and I have long shared an appreciation for artists with less conventional backgrounds, initially meeting on a project with @creativegrowth in Oakland. Everyday Rituals felt like a very natural way to partner on our first show together, and we created a platform for our favourite artists including Jim McDowell, Andrée Singer Thompson (who creates incredible ceramic and metal works made from pieces of scrap found around her studio and garden), Noel Guzmán Bofill Rojas, Peter Shire, Louis Mueller, Sandú Darié, Michael Lindsay-Hogg (perhaps best known for his films, but celebrated here for his series of eccentric portraits), Gerard Petrus Fieret, and E’wao Kagoshima—a nonagenarian who made his mark selling surreal and complex drawings on the streets of Manhattan.
We painted the large space at FARAGO Gallery, a former adult theater in Downtown L.A. a gaudy pink, and celebrated the artists during an opening with tacos al pastor from Grand Central Market across the road.
Fond memories of this one, looking forward to our next one, Max!
