Photos by @gabriellanbaez On assignment for @natgeo. On September 20th, 2017 Hurricane María made landfall in Puerto Rico. Today, on the fifth anniversary of the storm, Puerto Rico faces yet another catastrophic aftermath caused by Hurricane Fiona. During our time in the field, we learned that for many of the families we worked with time stood still. Since the storm, the living conditions in Puerto Rico have only deteriorated. The back to back trauma of an island in crisis hasn’t allowed us the space to grieve properly. Hurricane María marks a before and after in Puerto Rico. Today is an especially challenging day for Puerto Ricans on the island and in the diaspora.
