I was 9 years old when I was introduced to Barry Harris. My mom was taking his vocal jazz class around 42nd street and mentioned to him that she was looking for a new piano teacher for her daughter. He generously invited us over that Sunday and decided to teach me, every lesson starting with some chess and continuing with Bach preludes, Chopin, countless scales, practicing Schmitt, quoting Bud Powell. His influences became my influences. He lived at the Baroness’s house, the last place Thelonious Monk lived. Monk’s 2 Steinway grand pianos still upstairs overlooking the Hudson River, the NYC skyline looking back at us. We would duet the song “Pannonica” And perform at bird land whenever he would have a show (Pannonica, one of the Baroness’s names. always teaching without me even really knowing it). Even after he had a stroke and had minimal movement in his left hand, he still insisted I come over for lessons. Barry is the reason why I continued with the piano. He showed me that it wasn’t just about practicing, it’s been about community and history, and about passing the baton to the next generation, hopefully sparking inspiration. He changed my life and impacted so many others. I’m forever grateful you blessed my life. One of the best jazz pianists and educators of our time!!#barryharris
