For over 24 hours, our marine mammal rescue team tracked four dolphins as they swam close to shore along the coastline of Cape Cod Bay. When the dolphins eventually reached Chipman's Cove—an area with large tidal fluctuations in Wellfleet, MA—the team was ready to spring into action. With little chance of swimming out of this area on their own once the water would recede, IFAW's expert team assessed the situation and used the water to their advantage. They made the thoughtful decision to coax the dolphins carefully toward shore where they could be stretchered and brought to safety. All four dolphins were transported to a deeper water release site off Provincetown, traveling in IFAW's mobile dolphin rescue clinic. This custom-designed vehicle enables IFAW veterinarians to perform health assessments and stabilize the dolphins while quickly traveling to the best site for release. The dolphins were released as a pod and swam off closely together.
