What's our Safer Seas and Rivers Service? 📱🌊
The SSRS gets live CSOs (combined sewage overflows) and PRFs (pollution risk forecasts) data from water companies and regulators for over 400 rivers and coastline locations & alerts users on pollution events.
How does it work?
When a sewage discharge event occurs or a pollution risk forecast is issued, Surfers Against Sewage is automatically notified and creates an alert through the SSRS so surfers, swimmers and other water users can avoid this potentially harmful pollution incident.
What do the symbols stand for?
✔️ The green tick/dot symbol means there are no water quality alerts in place in that location.
❌ The red cross/dot means there’s been a sewage discharge in the last 48 hours or there’s a pollution risk forecast in place. The app will tell users what type of alert is in place. We advise everyone to carry out their own risk assessment before getting in the water.
❄️ Locations marked with a snowflake/grey dot only receive PRF data from the regulator, and only during the bathing season. During the winter they are marked as ‘Out of Season’.
🔧 The wrench symbol means sewer systems in this location are under maintenance and the water company has temporarily disabled real-time alerts.
You can use the in-app functions to submit a health report if you have been sick due to swimming in polluted waters to help us gather evidence. You can also email your MP or water company to ask them to pipe up and #EndSewagePollution.
You can find out more information and download the app via the link in the bio @surfersagainstsewage. If you don't have access to a smartphone, you can access a 'lite' version on our website.
