Repost from our Founder @l.smith23 who is in Accra, Ghana and visited the Slave Castles and Dungeons for the first time. “Today I walked in the dungeons of 540 year old slave castles where my ancestors were forced through the doors of no return onto slave ships. Never to see home again. Im rarely at a loss for words. But at the moment there is alot to process about what I saw... what I heard... what I FELT inside those dungeons. There are no words to adequately and accurately describe my emotions right now. But I will say, the intense sadness that gripped me did not break me down the way I thought it would. I anticipated crying my eyes out. But I did not. See, in order for me to be typing this right now, means that going back in my family tree, someone I am related to was in those slave castles. Someone in my lineage survived those dungeons. Then they survived 4 months on a ship across the Atlantic. Then they survived the cruelty and evil of American chattel slavery for 400 years in the good ol USA. Then they survived 150 years of Black codes, Jim Crow, And everything European and White supremacy tried to do to destroy us. Do you know what that means about my DNA? The tagline for @activelyblack is “There Is Greatness In Our DNA”.... I feel that more now than I ever have before. My ancestors were forced across the Atlantic in chains. I went back across the Atlantic on a flight to visit them. Ive never felt this connected to my ancestors as I do now. If you thought my fire was burning hot already...
