For the fifth issue of the art publication PUBLIC @public_editions , 31 photographers were each assigned a state in America as a photographic theme. Assigned the state of ‘Maryland’, I was quickly riveted by archival imagery of women at work during my process of research. I noticed a significant disparity between the roles of black and white women at that time. (which is historically obvious, but interesting) White female workers engaged in a prestigious array of fields such as science, technology and high-end recreational activities inclusive of carriage riding and fishing, whilst Black women were limited to picking crab meat, stringed beans and packaging canned tomatoes to name a few occupational roles. This work acts as a reversal of roles through a reappropriated and reimagined history. It is a fictional exploration of the photograph as evidence—where Black women were afforded equal opportunities, omitting the existence and history of societal restrictions. Thank you @mcwhirterstudio for the cover and for including me in this enjoyable exploration!
