Dear followers, I want to talk to you about something that is very close to my heart. A few years ago, I saw the documentary For Sama and it has stayed with me ever since. The film focuses on Waad Al-Kateab’s journey as a journalist and mother in the Syrian uprising. It broke my heart and made me realize what it means to be a refugee: to leave behind your country, your loved ones, and your home. When the Taliban took over Afghanistan and so many people had to flee, I knew I wanted to take action, so I contacted @vluchtelingenwerk.nederland .
With their help, I took a closer look at The Netherlands, my home country, and the way we treat refugees. It pained me to see the polarization in the political and personal debate as well as the enormous amount of people stuck in a broken and inhumane system. The worldwide refugee problem is extremely complex and I’m in no way an expert on it. I would like to use my platform to create a connection between refugees and the people lucky enough to feel safe in their own homes. To create understanding and compassion.
Therefore, I’m honored to announce that I’m the newest ambassador for @vluchtelingenwerk.nederland : an organization that stands up for the interests of refugees in The Netherlands and helps them to build a new life. Together we are looking for the best ways I can help. It’s still a bit of a search and I’m learning a lot, so bare with me! I’m really excited for this opportunity and to show you more of what we are working on. Together we can make a change.
