I know it feels as though the planet is burning, women’s right are diminishing and guns are proliferating but somehow we have to keep positive and active.
A few months ago my friend @celinecelines introduced me to @ayanaeliza and we proudly dressed Ayana for her first TED talk. Ayana is the guru when it comes to climate activism and she acknowledges that when it comes to climate action, all too often everyone is asked to do the same things: vote, protest, donate, spread the word, and lower your carbon footprint. And, yes, it’s great to do those things. But recently she challenges us to use our unique talents to do more but in areas we enjoy. Hence she created a Climate Action Venn Diagram where you can ask yourself:
- What are you good at? What are your areas of expertise? What can you bring to the table? Think about your skills, resources, and networks.
- What is the work that needs doing? Are there particular climate and justice solutions that you’re keen on?[Swipe for a partial list via @projectdrawdown.]
- What brings you joy and satisfaction? There are sooooo many things that need to be done.
The goal is to be in the heart of your Venn diagram, where these three circles overlap, for as many minutes of your life as you can.
Through our company we try to make clothing that is less harmful to the planet. But on a more simple level Poppy Rain and I chose composting as our action as we like gardening together.
All of the organic waste in our garbage and landfills generates methane. Methane is more than 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere, so composting your wasted food can greatly reduce methane emissions and positively impact climate change. Can you think of simple or significant ways you can work with colleagues, friends or family to help prevent climate change?
