Gloria Estefan will make history by becoming the first Hispanic woman ever inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
‘To be the first of anything at this age is fantastic,’ Estefan said of her historic achievement when speaking to ‘CBS Mornings’ on Wednesday.
As both a solo performer and the face of Miami Sound Machine, the Cuba-born Estefan is credited with helping Latin music reach a wider audience in the 1970s and '80s. She is known for a bevy of chart-climbing hits, such as ‘Conga,’ ‘Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,’ ‘Turn the Beat Around,' and ‘1-2-3.’
In speaking to ‘CBS Mornings,’ Estefan acknowledged it was not an easy feat to break into a music industry that was largely white-dominated.
‘We got a lot of no's at the beginning of our career. 'No, this sound will never work. No, you are not going to be able to cross over. No, you can't compete on a world level,’’ Estefan said. ‘Of course, we didn't believe that. When we got the opportunity to give a hand up or leg up to other Latinos, other Latin artists that we knew could be amazing, it was wonderful to be able to say yes.’
Other inductees to the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year include Snoop Dogg, Sade, Jeff Lynne, Glen Ballard, Teddy Riley, and Liz Rose.
The 2023 class of songwriters 'represents not just iconic songs but also diversity and unity across genres, ethnicity and gender, songwriters who have enriched our lives and, in their time, literally transformed music and the lives of billions of listeners all over the world,' said Nile Rogers, the hall’s chair, in a statement.
