For passengers who use wheelchairs, air travel in the U.S. can be embarrassing, uncomfortable and even dangerous. Risks include personal injury, the loss of expensive equipment and accidents resulting from a lack of accessible bathrooms. To better understand the obstacles faced by wheelchair users, The New York Times sent the reporter @amandamomorris and the photographer @scottymacphoto to document a recent domestic trip made by Charles Brown, president of Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Because of insufficient accessibility, individuals with disabilities often endure indignities from the moment they arrive at the airport to the moment they leave. Much of this could be avoided if airplanes and airports were designed to accommodate passengers who use wheelchairs, Brown and other advocates say. A recent initiative from the Department of Transportation to establish a bill of rights for passengers with disabilities offers some hope for improvement, although its effects remain to be seen.
