Cy’s Ghost (Predella), 2022, 34x20 inches @platformart_com @spencerbrownstonegallery Cy Twombly’s work holds a special place for me. It felt like a revelation when I started painting, and today “his ghost seems still around”, like air. Through my ongoing research of earth tones in old paintings, especially the use of green earth pigment as an underlayer I noticed a distinctive use of a very similar tone as a surface color: A green-gray is oftentimes used for depicting walls in the early Italian Renaissance works - as if this would be the color of air. Cy’s Ghost is the first painting that has this surface color. It is the space where marks are floating and blowing - especially the brown-pink ones in this painting behave like clouds and blossoms in the wind. As a side note: Perhaps Cy Twombly’s profound role in the development of my painting is comparable to what the part of a Predella does within an altar painting: "Predella is an Italian term for the long horizontal (and multiple piece) structure at the base or 'foot' of an altarpiece.
