Nine years ago, we rescued Safran from a large dairy farm. The farm had planned to send Safran to a calf ranch the next day — the day after his birth — to raise him for veal production. This is a common practice: Male calves can’t produce milk, so they are raised to be slaughtered for veal or cheap beef. When Safran arrived at our Acton Sanctuary, he was sick, weak, and had trouble eating. He would’ve died without tube feedings and intensive care, and our live-in caregiver even slept beside Safran each night — feeding the youngster every two hours. Thankfully, he pulled through. Safran has now grown into a gentle and fearless leader. He’s closest with Cowboy, another older steer, but is a good friend to everyone — cow and human alike!
