Even before learning perfumery, I felt like I had to hide my love for all things perfume and fragrance.
Even though I grew up in a relatively liberal area, there was still subtle judgement and funny looks reserved for boys and yound men that liked “colognes” - and heaven forbid you dared shop in the “perfume” section.
But perfumery taught me that scent is inherently genderless. The smell of a rose just exists, and aromschemicals certainly don’t care!
Yet society, and the fragrance industry, have intertwined to create all kinds of fake rules around who is allowed to smell like what.
Even to the point of convincing people that “colognes” are specially designed for men, “perfumes” are for women, and “unisex” fragrances are homehow in the middle.
But there’s no formulas or ways to make a fragrance for a man or a woman. It’s all just perfume.
Because perfume is for everyone.
