As I’m sitting at a park in Montreal, I noticed an older man on a wheel chair missing both legs smiling as he watches both Izzy and Ollie playing in the playground. He turns to me and asks where I’m from. I tell him I was born in Brazil, but I am also American. He points at himself and says Iran. We smile and stare deeply in each others’ eyes for quite a few seconds. In that moment, nothing needed to be spoken, time stood still. We became one. Two souls recognizing each other on this physical plane. He comes closer to me and shows me a picture of his granddaughters Dosa and Dorna, same age as both of my daughters. After this interaction and reflecting in the current state of our world, these were some of the questions that came into my mind. Why should the safety and peace of my daughters be more important than the safety and peace of his granddaughters? Why does most of the United States budget continue to fund the military industrial complex that continues to kill thousands of innocent people on a daily basis? How can our leaders go to bed at night knowing that they are aiding in the killing of innocent lives? How are we ok knowing that are tax dollars are funding the killing of innocent people around the world?
