I want to tell you about an experience I had in the gym last week.
I’m a personal trainer, I’ve worked in and around the fitness industry for the last seven years... And I still ask for help.
Last week I was doing an exercise that I knew didn’t feel quite right. The machine was shaking around a bit and I was basically using the momentum to throw myself in and out of the movement rather than the intentioned muscle group.
Rather than let my ego rule my session and just carry on doing the exercise without seeing much progression, I asked a trainer for help and within a few minutes (and some really helpful advice) I’d completely changed how I did the movement and as a result it felt 10x more challenging.
My reason for telling you is that I think so many of us worry that asking for help makes us seem as though we don’t know what we’re doing, or as though we have somehow done something wrong.
The reality is that very few are ‘experts’. The majority of us are always learning, improving and tweaking things as that’s what truly compliments a fitness journey. Staying small, never taking risks, and never asking for help is what keeps you doing the same thing over and over and expecting change.
So this is my little nudge to you, that that exercise you’re not feeling 100% confident with... Ask for help. 99.9% of personal trainers would be happy to help with a bit of advice and it can really make all the difference ❤️
