I woke up feeling an immense amount of grief, sadness. Our elected leaders once again broke their sacred contract and the public trust. I didn’t say anything yesterday because I was too angry. I was outraged by the political violence directed towards Black children and people, the queer community, migrants, and other communities of color.
As someone who spent nearly ten years working at City Hall, I must say that there is absolutely no place for this kind of dehumanizing and demeaning behavior. As a Chicano and person who co-founded a company committed to disrupting systems and structures of oppression, including all the ways that anti-blackness, anti-indigeneity, anti-immigrant, anti-Asian, and anti-LGBTQIA+, shows up in our daily lives, I want to unequivocally say that Nury Martinez, Kevin DeLeon, Gil Cedillo, and Ron Herrera should be held accountable for the harm that they have done.
As someone who has spent his entire life building Black and Brown solidarity, I believe in restorative justice and in immediately addressing the unintended (and in this case intended) consequences of one’s actions. As such, rather than judge or isolate these “leaders,” I know that we must call them in so that they could take full responsibility for their actions. I ask them to deeply reflect on the steps that they must take to confront their own internalized racism. I ask them to join me and other Latinx allies in participating in anti-racist training so we could model the ongoing, lifelong work that we must do to decolonize ourselves. And I ask them to fulfill their obligations as elected leaders to address the harm that they have done, including resigning or being removed from office.
We have much work to do to challenge and disrupt white supremacy in all of its ugly forms. We have much more work to do together to not only hold ourselves accountable but to transform the systems that harm us all.
