‘Before you go, Manager. I must report to you one more thing. The Sun was very kind to me. He was always kind to me from the start. But when I was with Josie, once, he was particularly kind. I wanted Manager to know.' ‘Yes. I'm sure the Sun has always been good to you, Klara.’ As she said this, Manager turned to the wide sky behind her, raising a hand to her eyes, and for a moment we looked at the Sun together. Then she turned back to me and said: I have to geton. Well, Klara. Goodbye.' 'Goodbye, Manager. Thank you.' - Klara and the Sun, Kazuo Ishiguro My second reading of this book has endeared it to me. My first reading left me intrigued but mystified. This second reading left me illuminated, touched, and, like Klara, full of hope. In typical form, Ishiguro leaves us with more questions than answers, but what good questions they are... What is the human heart? How are we to live with technology? Is the Sun (God) really pouring over our lives, healing and nourishing even when we do not notice? When I recorded the conversation on part five with my lovely sister @sarahwanders we had revelations about the book while recording that I’m still savoring. You can listen to the episode of the link in my bio. And then tell me what you made of the book (and the questions it asks us) in the comments here. It’s been a pleasure to read together. Until next year! And remember: “The Sun always has ways to reach us.” ☀️
