SWIPE FOR CHALLENGE DETAILS AND GET INVOLVED ➡️➡️ ------ 👥 The Refugee Buddy Project opened in 2017 as a community group welcoming people newly arrived in Hastings seeking refuge and safety. Founded by Rossana Leal, with lived experience from a refugee family fleeing Chile in the 1970s, the aim is to ensure a Culture of Welcome, Dignity and Support similar to that received by her own family when they were welcomed by the mining community of Cowdenbeath, Fife. Today the project covers Rother & Wealden Districts in East Sussex, and includes support for people with varying refugee and asylum status. 🧵 @stitch_for_change is a community sewing and patchwork project that began in late 2019 to bring people together through storytelling and making. The project was inspired by the Chilean #arpillera movement - a pictorial applique technique. Arpilleras were usually made by women to depict daily life during times of social and political hardship, recording their oppression as an act of resistance. This project responded to the Covid public health crisis by creating an online space for people to come together and find a collective voice. The project was put together and coordinated by Rossana Leal, founder of The Refugee Buddy Project, and facilitated by textile artists Jimena Pardo (Bordando por la Memoria) and Janey Moffatt. The patchwork stories made by the community have been exhibited at the De La Warr Pavillion in Bexhill and at Hastings Museum. — 🌍The #SolidarityKnowsNoBorders network is a community of resistance fighting for migrant justice & dignity. The network links up over 50 migrant justice organisations, supporting them to recruit new people and build capacity, and provide resources that we can all use to build the movement and to win.
