Art is inoculation. Inspired by algae's mind bending properties and prominent presence in our Seoul show, Gladstone Seoul press liaison @s_bot honored the algal ecology in the form of a cyanobacteria tattoo. Cyanobacteria, an antecedent to algae, is a photosynthetic organism that produces oxygen that we humans need to breathe on the planet. To ripple out into the "biopolitical", South Korea is the only developed nation where tattoo artists' work is illegal. Only medical practitioners are allowed to administer tattoos in Korea, so to practice as a tattoo artist is highly risky. We connected with intrepid artist @griffinshim to ink up members of our team on a balmy evening, under a beautiful Elizabeth Peyton painting. Art can shapeshift and mutate from the wall to the body to the ocean and into law. My time in Seoul was a full porous acquiescence to art and its rich host environment.
