Life is unpredictable and doesn’t give us any breaks. Sometimes it feels like we lose control so we try to control our kids, our partners, family, friends, co-workers and strangers, and we suffer for it.
In reality, we can control nothing but our thoughts, our words, and our actions. And to do that, we must learn to use our breath. WHY?
Our breath is our superpower. It is the first thing to keep us alive as we birth into this physical world, and the last thing we do before we leave it. Our breath is Life.
🧠Breathing is involuntary, a part of the autonomic nervous system. Meaning you don’t have to think about it, as your body does it automatically. However, breathing is also a part of the somatic nervous system 💪which is made up of motor neurons and sensory neurons that help the body perform voluntary activities.
Breathing (exhaling specifically) 😮💨is a part of the parasympathetic nervous system which calms down the body 😌and conserve energy. In other words, YOUR BREATH IS MEANT TO BE CONTROLLED.
When we pause to control our breath we are focusing attention 🔬on the body instead of the swirling thoughts in the mind which create the suffering. This is the most important step ✅ in developing self-regulation, and an important skill we want to teach our children.
Just like we teach them how to brush their teeth to protect from cavities 🦷 , we want to teach our kids how to control their breath to protect them from a lifetime of unnecessary suffering 😖.
If humans would come with a manual 📒, breathing would be the first skill after eating, drinking, sleeping and reproducing.
