RETURNING TO OUR FLOWERS, 2019
Kimberly (@museummammy ) and I chatted for Vice (Thanks to @sarahlubyburke ) about my work and this piece featured in New Visions, an exhibition at @fotografiska.ny (thanks to @sup_dst ) showcasing 14 emerging photographers from around the world who are changing the way we see. Unfortunately, the show was closed due to COVID-19. RETURNING TO OUR FLOWERS, 2019 is the first image from a new project, Flowers at Your Feet, which serves to highlight men of different experiences by documenting grooming practices, gestures of greetings, and exhibitions of care and attention amongst one another in communal and private spaces. Honestly, frustration is what drove me to develop this project, but Love has always been at the forefront of this endeavor. I realized the majority of mainstream conversations regarding masculinity involved little to no inclusion of trans-masculine and non-binary masculine voices. I find marginalized individuals are always receiving celebratory daps, but never being asked to join the table until it's "their time." But I don't want to replicate tables. The biggest table holds 12 people, and I am more driven to build homes. The goal of Flowers at Your Feet extends beyond imagery. It's a supportive way to sustain the efforts of everyone involved in this project — from workshops to publications to challenging yet gratifying conversations on how we can build a better world and move away from patriarchal ideologies that not only harm us but harm women and femmes as well. These conversations deserve bigger nests. I'm excited to continue this work and thankful for everyone who has been a part of it thus far.
In the hopes of reaching the moon men fail to see the flowers that blossom at their feet. — Albert Schweitzer
