This may or may not be true depending on what you ate.
If you ate packaged food that contained sugar, corn, soy, or canola in it, that food was not genetically modified to withstand glyphosate(depending on your age đ)So what changed?
First, GMO stands for genetically modified organism. This means the DNA structure of the plant, like soy for example, has been altered to withstand certain pesticides/herbicides being sprayed on it instead of withering or shriveling up. Companies sell Roundup Ready crops which are designed to survive applications of Roundup (main ingredient is glyphosate). Then, the herbicide sprayed crop is harvested and enters the food supply. This became common in the 2000s.
Is glyphosate only a concern for GMO foods?
No, unfortunately. There is a whole list of foods that are sprayed with glyphosate that arenât GMOs. Wheat, oats and almonds arenât genetically modified crops but theyâre common ones when it comes to being sprayed with glyphosate.
Many debate glyphosate is not a concern due to its concentration. So how much of it youâre consuming is dependent on what foods you eat each day.
What is the concern with glyphosate?
-In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, reviewed extensive U.S., Canadian and Swedish studies on glyphosateâs human health effects, as well as research on laboratory animals. The IARC classified the chemical as âprobably carcinogenicâ to humans.
-In 2017, California listed glyphosate in its Proposition 65 registry of chemicals known to cause cancer.
-A 2019 meta-analysis study showed glyphosate increases the risk of cancer by 41%
-In 2021, Bayer (who owns Round Up) announced it would end the sale of glyphosate based herbicides (including Round Up) from the public marketplace. While this is a small victory, it can still be used commercially by farmers so glyphosate will still be in our food supply.
