"It doesn't look natural anymore!" "We can't ruin all this beauty with accessibility!" "Trails shouldn't be accessible to everyone - they are already overused!" When accessibility improvements are made or discussions had, inevitably people complain about "ruining nature" or "making it too easy" for people. But actually, making accessibility improvements can lessen the impact on outdoor spaces! What's worse, paving a parking lot or leaving it dirt and letting people park wherever they want? Putting in a boardwalk or letting people tromp through mud and wetlands? The larger issue is that outdoor recreation, and settler colonialism, ALREADY has an impact on nature. I hate to burst bubbles, but that trail you love already looks very different from what it would be if it wasn't a recreation site, hadn't been logged, etc. Complaining about it only because of accessibility improvements is ableist.
