Spring work is in full swing! That means mowing cover crops, getting all that organic matter (my dad calls it green juice for the ground) into the soil, and preparing a seed bed for planting. Cover crops make for great nesting habitat. So, sometimes, when we’re mowing the cover crops or discing them over, we find a nest in the tractor’s path. Then, we rescue the eggs by hand and take them to a hatchery just up the road. Last night, my dad and I brought nine turkey eggs to the hatchery. We carefully placed them in an egg carton and put the carton inside an incubator. After they hatch, the turkeys will be raised to about five weeks of age and released back into the wild. Of course, we couldn’t help but stop to watch the ducklings for a little while. And because my dad brings a little whimsy with him wherever he goes, he left behind a commemorative egg from the 1992 White House Easter Egg Roll. I think he got it on eBay.
