Toddlers are tantrum machines 🤖 If you have a toddler you know how hard emotion regulation is for them🌪Heck, emotion regulation is hard for all of us!
That’s because the brain 🧠 areas responsible for self-regulation and emotion regulation are not developed yet in children.
And for us adults, emotion regulation is hard because most of us grew up in households with parents who didn’t know how to regulate their own emotions let alone co-regulate with their children.
Emotion regulation starts at infancy 👶 It develops most in the toddler and preschool years, but it also keeps developing right into adulthood.
Research shows that children develop emotion regulation through warm and responsive relationships with a parent or a caregiver. They also develop it by watching the adults around them 👀
Yes, a YouTube video, an app, and a mindful teacher can show our child how to breathe or do a yoga pose, and calm down temporarily. Timesouts and punishments can temporarily paralyze our child’s big feelings through fear, but none of the above can teach our children the tools to build their emotion regulation skills for the long run 🏃
It’s up to us parents to practice emotion regulation ourselves and teach it to our children with repetition and consistency. 🧑🏫 We are our child's best teacher.
Struggling with your child’s big feelings AND finding the time to co-regulate? Our seasonal Yoga Play Kits are here to help and are on sale! Packed with coping skills that WORK for kids age 2-6. Link in Bio ✨
