I’ve been speaking recently about shifting perspectives on what it means to become disabled. There is no denying that life as a disabled person in this world can be extremely difficult however my experience has been that, despite the hardships, becoming disabled has brought so much richness into my life. The world has so much fear around becoming, or being disabled, that it’s blind to all the good that can happen because of, not despite, living as a disabled person in this world. I see, both directly and the indirectly, that disability is a big bad monster that needs to be eradicated. However as someone who has grown so much since becoming disabled - I have so much more self-awareness, I’m so much more compassionate and understanding and patient than I’ve ever been, and my focus is not just on what I can get out of life now but on what I can give - that it’s really difficult to hear that the world wants to wipe out my kind of existence. It’s jarring. There is a monster that needs battling but it’s not disability, it’s the inequality, in-accessibility and the plague of ableism spreading throughout the world. There is a fight that needs to be won but it’s not with disability. Pick your battles wisely.
