How to start planning a backcountry trip
('save' this post for planning)
• Narrow down your destination choices — where do you want to explore? National Park? Provincial Park? Figure out the area in which you want to visit!
• Choose your specific trail — weigh out the pros and cons of the trails in the area. Take distance and elevation both into consideration. Remember, you’ll be carrying 30+ Lbs on your back.
• Route details — Figure out where the campsites along the trail area and where you want to stay. Another thing to figure out is where you’ll be having a water source along the trail. Where are all the outhouses located? Do you need any permits or registration? Is there a wardens cabin? Are there any trail restrictions?
• Gear and Supplies — How long are you going for? What time of year is it? What is the weather forecast looking like? Is there a water source nearby? These are all things to ask yourself when packing clothes, food, water, and gear.
• Final preparations — Pack your backpack efficiently to help distribute weight. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast. Share your itinerary with someone at home
More backcountry reservations open tomorrow! I hope these tips help motivate you to get a spot (not my spot though... 😉) 🏕
