Thinking back to that day 19 years ago-walking into an elevator as an intern at 9:10am on 42nd street- when the Manhattan skyline changed forever. I had just arrived as a UN rapporteur in the city of my dreams and it never occurred to me to leave and abandon the place I desperately wanted to be part of. It took me time to process the magnitude of loss and I can still remember the faces on some of the missing posters and the apartment buildings outside which memorials sprang across the city. The city came together and rebuilt. A show of incredible strength. To Jerry Seinfeld’s point: “We’re going to keep going with New York City if that’s all right with you. And it will sure as hell be back.” Thinking of all those whose lives were changed forever and those who perished needlessly on 9/11.
