California's Seedy Overbelly- There's a lot to love above CA's natural aesthetic endowment. However, the San Joaquin Valley from Redding down to Bakersfield along the I-5 corridor has always been an area to get thru en-route to somewhere else as opposed to a destination. Lots of ag, frequently smells like butts, hella flat...It is this exact flatness that is responsible for these Vernal pool landscapes. Back in February I was hired to work on a project aiming to capture the beauty of these abstract melty worlds for a book, film and campaign to preserve/convert many of these places into protected land trust conservancies. Over the course of several weeks I learned about the processes responsible for these dimpled galaxies: ground squirrels digging and pushing dirt away from their burrows, flatness, low point of gravity, water, millenia, rinse, repeat and SHABLAMO...abstract ecstacy hidden in plain sight. These are but a small sample of my images from this project.
