What is #actinickeratosis and how do derms treat it?
According to the @mayoclinic, AK is "a rough, scaly patch on the skin that develops from years of sun exposure. It's often found on the face, lips, ears, forearms, scalp, neck, or back of the hands."
AK typically develops slowly and usually first appears in people over 40. If left untreated, there is 5% to 10% risk of actinic keratosis turning into squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.
Treatment options include:
✅ A topical cream or gel such as fluorouracil, imiquimod, etc.
✅ Freezing (cryotherapy)
✅ Scraping (curettage)
✅ Laser therapy
✅ Photodynamic therapy
