Today, the world celebrates Nelson Mandela Day in honour of South Africa’s first democratically elected President and global statesman, who passed away nearly a decade ago. It was on this day that South Africa's first black and democratically elected President was born in Transkei, South Africa in 1918. The United Nations officially declared July 18 as Nelson Mandela International day in November 2009, and it was first celebrated in 2010. In 2020, the inaugural African Youth Survey revealed that over half (55%) of Africa’s youth polled believe Nelson Mandela was the single individual to have had the greatest impact on Africa. His spirit continues to loom large with people from all backgrounds across the world and his legacy will live on. Watch this video to hear directly what some young African diaspora voices in the U.K. think about his legacy.
