Thank you @andreaanderssonrivers for saying so beautifully what this moment in this project is. No way could I have said it better!

Book-speak is code. We celebrate the proof and the score and the gutter. This week we received new proofs; there is something special about this word when it is plural. It reminds us that there are multiple ways to show something. We need more than one way. Wet proofs, hard proofs, soft proofs— signs have to hold up against all the conditions of living that make seeing (much less seeing from another’s perspective) so very difficult.
For her forthcoming publication, ‘I Will Keep My Soul,’ Helen Cammock selected transparency paper for certain images, inviting the reader to see multiple images at once. Books are such sophisticated technology – in part – because they are also simple. What feels so hard in the real world – the capacity to sustain multiple, often competing, truths at once—is rendered plain. And the image we thought we understood so well in its original context is so switly estranged by a new bedfellow.
We cannot wait to share this book (co-imprinted by Rivers, Siglio Press, and the CAAM) this winter, but in the meantime, we marvel at how much we learn every time we endeavor to make one.
All thanks to the brilliance of @cammockhelen and @sigliopress and the extraordinary holdings of @amistadresearchcenter in New Orleans.
