Repost @marisa_jahn Installing the amate paper for the @bienal_biau @mextropoli architectural festival (Sept 21-25) in Mexico City! I’ve been working with amate throughout the summer to understand its material history and design affordances (including how to make it waterproof!) Amate paper is a Meso-American art form influenced by China and other cultures. The paper’s perforations are seen as apertures between past and present. In Mexico, this artform is often associated with the Day of the Dead because the paper was principally created from the fibrous Amate tree (Ficus insipidus) whose prominent, above-ground roots were regarded as portals to the underworld.
