“Showtime,” a new mural on the exterior of Oasis nightclub, boldly claims space for the queer community in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood. With its hot-pink and lipstick-red color scheme, visual motifs like swirling stage curtains, and subjects like muscle-boy pinups and legendary drag performers, it suggests a retro-seaminess appropriate for the area’s designation as the Leather and LGBTQ Cultural District. 🎨 It may also be a signal of a post-pandemic renaissance in the city’s LGBTQ arts scene. Recent months have seen the openings of LGBTQ-oriented art venues, among them the Liminal Space gallery in the South Park area, which focuses on art by transgender artists; gallery Schlomer Haus, which shows work by LGBTQ artists; and gallery-artisan boutique Queer Artists Featured (Queer A.F.) in the Castro. Programs like the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s Queer Artists for Queer Spaces also continue to support the creation of new visual art projects, including partially funding the “Showtime” mural. And in a civic first, Mayor London Breed announced the creation of a new drag laureate position funded by the city. As LGBTQ Pride Month arrives, the city’s queer artistic landscape is looking decidedly improved after two years of the coronavirus pandemic.
