Juneteenth was a beginning. An entry point to Black liberation that has been stunted, manipulated, and reimagined to continually uplift white supremacy and capitalism in this country ever since.
Growing up in Texas and learning about Juneteenth was also my entry point to understanding how this country could treat me and the folks who look like me. I was told that on this day, Black enslaved folks were told they were free, but I couldn’t help but think deeper about WHY that announcement was delayed for years...
Today is a day to celebrate the relief and joy my ancestors felt upon being notified of their emancipation, but it is also a day to remember how far we all are till freedom come.
Let’s get free, by any means necessary
